Some dogs just steal your heart from the beginning. Lucah was that dog. I can’t think of any Mastiff that was a better ambassador for the breed. Though he was imposing in size, he had the sweetest temperament of any dog I have owned. Good-natured would best describe him. He liked the girls and never felt a need to intimidate the boys…I guess he knew he was the king. He was our “meet and greet” dog for families that wanted to come visit a Mastiff up close and personal. He could be stubborn when he wanted to and he loved to tease Caitlin. Most of all he loved his toys and always took time to pick one to bring in at night.
He wasn’t the most handsome dog in his litter, but he never failed to impress and was a people magnet every where he went. I always felt like I was walking with a rock star. He was a confident dog in any situation…bomb proof as we say in the business. I feel so lucky to have two of his offspring with us. They seem to have inherited his sweet disposition, love of toys and silly ways.
Lucah sired five litters totaling 23 puppies. Four finished their championships, many earned points towards that title, others earned Rally and Obedience titles (must have got that smart gene from Grandma Calli). Most have Canine Good Citizen certificates. All have been a credit to their breed and wonderful family members.
Lucah is the first Mastiff we bred and owned to make it to double digits. I would have loved to have him for another 10 years, but his legs failed him and the kindest thing we could do was to let him go. I think he was ready since getting around was so tiring for him at the end. Riles taught us not to hold on too long or too tight…just enjoy the time we have together.
I know we will be sad for some time and miss him forever, but we have great memories to keep close to our hearts. Please give your pets a hug from us and the Lucah Palooka.
